Writing Center Freebie (family word cards, event word cards, and fancy paper)

Writing center freebies perfect for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten (family word cards, event word cards, and fancy writing paper)

The writing center in my classroom is always busy. Students are always creating cards, writing letters to their families, drawing pictures, making books, and coping words at their own level. Students are scribbling, writing random letters, and some are sound spelling. I have a multi-age preschool with 3, 4, and 5 year olds.

The writing center is an amazing place for students to learn about letters and sounds in a purposeful and meaningful way. My students are always interested in how to write the words MOM and DAD (grandma and grandpa too). A student may be making a card for their mom and want to write the word mom on the outside or the envelope. When their mom sees the letter their child made for them with the word mom on it, it will melt her heart and the child will know what they wrote was important!

To support students with this, I put a pocket chart by writing table. I can put word cards in the chart for students to use as reference in their writing. I know what you are thinking, preschoolers writing...no way right. YES they are writing in their own preschool way! Scribbling and writing random letters in the first stage in writing! Even if a child takes out the word card and just scribbles, it is meaningful to them and it should be just as meaningful to us too! We want to build confident writers and who LOVE to write! Celebrate those scribbles because eventually those scribbles will become letters and those letters will become words!

Spice up your writing center! Make your writing center a place where students LOVE to go with fun writing tool and writing supplies! I just love my black pocket chart to showcase themed word cards.

Fun Writing Tools: crayons, glitter crayons, metalliccrayons, twistable crayons, markers, skinny markers, scented markers, colored pencils, highlighters, and pens

Writing Supplies: envelopes, white paper, colored paper, note pads, post-its, hole punches, shape punches, tape, scissors, glue, clip boards, alphabet charts, family word cards, student name cards, and themed word cards

Writing Supplies & Manipulatives: letter lacing beads, cookie sheers, play dough, letter stamps, chalkboards, magnet letters, dry erase boards, clip boards, letter stickers, and letter tiles

Don't think word cards are only for writing. There are so many more activities you can do with them in your classroom!

  4. Hi Jackie! LOVE LOVE LOVE your ideas! I am using a LOT from your store. I went to your newsletter but can't seem to use the link for the free family word cards. Has this been disabled? Is there a way I can purchase them? I start school this week and would really like to have these displayed in my writing center. Thank you!

  8. Hi! I signed up and haven't received them either. Instead, I received a link for your 10 days of lesson plans. I have purchased a lot from your store, and would be willing to purchase the set if it is no longer free. Thanks!!

  9. Signed up for the newsletter on two separate occasions now, (the first time having been a few months ago) and still haven't gotten up the link to download. All I keep getting is a link that takes me back to this page, asking me to sign up for the newsletter, again. Is there something I'm missing? **Checked my junk email folder, not there either. Need these for the unit I'm starting next week, so any help here would be GREATLY appreciated!
